There isn't any one "best microphone" of course. It's like asking what the best guitar for rock is (of course it's a Les Paul).

I like the AKG 414 for my vocals, but other guys don't. I heard one guy say he tried every high end mic he had for one rapper, and none of them worked. Then he tried an Audix i5 (general purpose dynamic cardiod like a Shure SM-57) and that worked great.

Prepare for lots of opinions. All of them valid.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Shure SM-7, about $350

I'm not sure I can recommend a mic any better than the SM-7 but I really like my Shure KSM-44. It's about 2 1/2 times the cost of an SM-7 though and I don't really know if it's that much better for your application. I use it for both vocals and a room mic. And it excells at both.

    +1 on the sm7.
but you need a preamp that has a fair amount of gain. it's not broken, just very low output. and very small, but great sweet spot.

Rode NTK - affordable, great sounding mic. Under the stated range, I believe (well under).

If you are looking for an example of what it can do for a half-assed singer (such as myself), here is some stuff that was done with the NTK.

If it is for one specific singer (or for yourself) you could rent some microphones and see what you like. It's difficult to know what mic will work well with any given singer until you try it. You've gotten some great suggestions that are good starting points.

    Sounds good!

+1 on the NTK. Great bang for the buck for a tube mic.
