Told to me by a 95 year old wheelchair bound woman at a nursing home I was working at:

Don't ever live your life on someone else's terms. I stopped living life on my terms when I was 20 and now I am 95 and I've been miserable every day for the last 75 years and now there's nothing I can do about it.

Told by me to my step kids:

95% of the stuff that happens to you in life is the direct result of a decision you made. 5% is good or bad luck. If you do not like the way things are working out, make different decisions.

Told to me by an old boss/friend:

Manage to the rule, handle the exceptions.

a good friend of mine (who's a professional musician) said:
    "everybody has a day job"

my mother in law yrs ago when i had been searching/applying for college teaching jobs in art for years said to me:
"you're spending all your time looking for a job and not enjoying your life"

she was very smart, and that advice changed me. she sadly died of alzheimer's last year at the age of 79...i do miss her....
