I picked Megadeth mostly because Rust In Peace is my favorite thrash album ever and I prefer 'Deth's 1988 album So Far, So Good... So What! over Justice released that same year.
But it's SERIOUSLY close. Both released incredible music up to 1990. Disclaimer : I do indeed like bits and pieces here and there of their post-1990 work, before anyone wants to call me out on that, hah.

Hard to say since "Thrasher" bands were really at their peak in 1999.

Metallica was done with "And Justice For All", and Megadeth's high water mark was "Rust In Peace". Metallica had 4 amazing albums and a total winner EP. And Megadeth had 3 absolute killer albums.
    My vote is Metallica.

Metallica had the better songs, Megadeth had the better music.

I think rather than picking sides, we should stop and reflect how lucky we are to even be able to pick between bands of such high caliber and such exceptional contributions to music.

I thank the flying spaghetti monsters every day that we had not one, but BOTH these bands at the same time! It's an embarrasment of musical riches!

I voted Metallica, but only just

however, to think that if James/Lars/Cliff hadn't kicked Dave out of the band we would have been deprived Peace Sells...SFSGSW...RiP...C2E, and a whole lot more. the world of metal would have been much poorer without Megadeth

    C'mon - what about Slayer?

Can't choose between the two Ms from their respective classic eras/albums. My favorite albums from them both:
Ride The Lightning, Master, Justice, So Far So Good, Rust In Peace

For me though, I think 'Deth are still a going concern, consistently releasing awesome uncompromising albums. I love United Abominations (favorite track is Washington Is Next) and I dispute the 'Metallica had better songs' assertion above just on the strength of this track.

Metallica died for me after Black album. There, I said it - sorry.

Metallica overall, but hard to say whether Master of Puppets or Rust in Peace is better

I listen to Megadeth more. I’m another Rust in Peace guy.

I remember hearing Metallica for the first time. Master of Puppets album. Totally blown away. Then, Ride the Lightning. Even more blown away. I feel I could listen to either one of these works on the regular more than I could Justice and the Black album. To me, just awesome pieces of work. Megadeth, I will say, is one kick arse band, and Mustaine is a crazy talented musician. They have some great songs, but for me, a lot of their stuff got old to me rather quickly. I still have my faves, but Metallica gets my vote.

Yeah, but we all knew you would!

And I agree -- Overkill is what's in the truck CD player right now.

Gotta go Metallica, as they were my gateway band. Love Megadeth too though.

Here's a question: Better album (out of their stylistic shift albums)?

Black Album vs. Youthanasia - I really like both, but gotta go Black Album. It's really close though.

Load/ReLoad vs. Risk - If you trimmed the fat from Load/ReLoad you would have 1 very solid album. Risk is awful. I can get down with Breadline, but that's about it.
