Was he using a TS10 later in his career? Mine is not modded & it works just fine...

Lou I bought a TS10 recently and it was instant SRV...sent it to a guy to repair the jacks...he mods it ( when i specifically asked him not to)and the tone is gone. I sent it back and asked him to kindly unmod my pedal. IF it ain't broke...

I couldn not agree with you more. When I think of Tubescreamer, those are the two guys that immediately pop into my head. I think the reason is that, unlike KWS and some of the others (no offense to anyone), those two guys defined what the Tubescreamer can do, they made it their own, and now the rest of us run around trying to sound like them.

So what is a good track to hear Trey's classic TS sound?

Check out the twin solos on "You Enjoy Myself" from Phish's Junta Album. You don't really need to drag yourself through that whole album though.

listen to a live one disc one and 2 chalkdust torture and definately stash for a very long crazy guitar solo...its one of my favorite solos of all time
back then(92?) he used 2 ts9's with a ross compressor behind them for tons of saturation and sustain

He later had his pedals modded by analogmike and i think he now uses ts9/808/silvers

honestly its the ross that gives trey his signature sound...when he hits his second tube screamer for lead, you can hear a huge awesome wall of noise right before he shreds

that beautiful paul landoec? guitar helps too

Definitely Trey. However, the rest of his rig is really important in his sound (obviously). I have stacked Tubescreamers before and couldn't get anywhere close to his sound. I find that with that Tubescreamer sound you need to have one on all the time like he does and use one for more gain. Otherwise it totally changes your tone..go from whatever you have to all mids....in my experience anyway.

SRV just used the TS for a boost - volume full, drive off...

SRV for sure and the non-fusion Scott Henderson tones. He changes now and again, but it has been Analog Man Modded TS9 and lately a Maxon OD9.

I picked up a Maxon 808 recently and when messing with it, usually use the SRV thing as a benchmark for when I think it is sounding good.

    Peace,
    dk

I dunno about that... I was watching an old video and he had an 808 with the volume at 2 o'clock and the drive at 10 o'clock ... the tone was around 11 o'clock.... I think... I'd have to look at it again.
