I seem to recall a thread about packing speakers from our good friend Jim at Southbay Amprworks. You might try searching the forum.

Face down. I've heard that is better for the magnets.

I would be more worried about how much and what type of cushioning material to put between the inner and outer box. The speaker could end up getting bounced on its side or corner for that matter. I had an EV FORCE, that was packed better than average and it got jarred hard enough to knock the vent screen loose. Fortunately Neal at Neal's Speaker in Sacramento was able to grab it with long, curved medical forceps, pull it out and reglue it. All for $10.00. Thanks Neal. It was rattling against the back of the front dust cover and would have had to be reconed otherwise. Unbelievably the speaker worked fine and is my favorite speaker in my Boogie MKIIC+ Simul Class, a testament to the built quality of those old Electro Voice speaker and good luck.

I have a couple of Eminence speaker boxes made for cone up. I have Tone Tubby and Weber made for cone down.
