Bireli Lagren Fusion quartet.

Bireli Lagrene playing in a jazz fusion quartet. Although Bireli plays some amazing stuff here, I'm not sure I 'like' it. Bireli always seems frustrated. His watch is in the way. His presets are not at the same volume level. ( doesn't care?) I also feel that he chose the wrong musicians for the job. Where Bireli wants to go into the Jazzrock/ fusion realm ( think Holdsworth) his accompanists stay in the standard jazz idiom. If your outside lines or modern lines don't get a responce your bound to fall back in what your used to.I recently saw Booby McFerrin and Chick Core together and they are able to follow each others ideas no matter where the other one is going. Somebody needs to kick his but. Put him in a band with people like Gary Willis or Gary Husband, Scott Kinsey and really challenge him.

I really liked some of the stuff he played while jamming on his loop around 50 minutes in. The Three Views of a Secret type changes.

Just bought yesterday his latest album. Great, he is in fine shape, well accompanied with drums, Hammond B3 and sax. Recommended stuff.

That's how you could see it too. Anyway , conceptionally something not quite right with this project.

"Front Page", with Dennis Chambers and Dominique DiPiazza.
Magnifique! To my ear, it blows that Hot Club Gypsy Jazz stuff out of the water.
(admittedly, I'm never been much of a fan of that music, beyond Django)

I concur ! Very nice album, I am not always found of his overdriven tone, but the playing is as always stellar, and not that busy. The songs are really cool too, the quote by MrMitch sums it up quite well : easy to listen too, yet not easy listening music...

This clip was posted before and personally I love it though I have a few qualms. I think that Bireli is one of the greatest players ever. Insane talent and chops. He will become legendary in guitar circles IMO in years ahead as few before, as he is already is in Europe.

My favorites are the late 80's fusion releases, "Inferno" and "Foreign Affairs." "Front Page" too. I have a lot of other recordings that are stellar as well. A search on YT will also show many great performances.

He is a high wire act without a net and I don't care who he plays with when he "jams" with another guitar player, the jaws always go slack when Bireli plays. I was fortunate enough to see him live, which is a rarity in the US, so that is off my bucket list.

Yeah, that guy is off the hook and some prefer his gypsy jazz stuff but it's obvious he can do anything he wants and it will sound pretty much like himself. He's gotta follow whatever muse he's got in his brain. Love that! That stuff around 47 minutes solo with a looper is pretty cool.

Well said; I use to say that Bireli is the most talented player in decades, maybe since George Benson; there are a lot of exceptional players, but on a good night Bireli plays effortlessly lines after lines of pure music, with a limitless imagination, he reminds me of Charlie Parker for that: if you slow down their very fast playing, you still hear a sense of composition and logic (I don't know if you understand what I mean, difficult to translate !).

I had the opportunity to meet Bireli years ago, he's a very nice guy. Talked with people who work with him, he has a complex personality and sometimes his demons prevents him for having a regular career and his playing too suffers from that.
