Yes, another Black Keys thread. Recently I had the chance to play into a tiny terror combo cranked! I went straight into the amp and ended up getting, what sound to my ear, very similar to a Dan Auerbach kind of tone. This made me start to wonder, how much of his tone is from the actual fuzz box and how much of his tone is from his huge Marshall stacks cranked and with the front end hit hard? Note* talking about his russian muff tones, not some of the crazier octave up stuff he does.

He's said that in the studio he likes to crank small old amps. Of course, he uses big amps live with more pedals. I guess thats a good example of taking different paths to get a similar sound.

And yes, the Tiny Terror combo sounds killer cranked up! It's never made me think Black Keys, but it can get some pretty classic sounds. The Tiny Tiny cranked up good reminds me more of Black Sabbath!

Most of his studio tone sounds nothing at all like a cranked Marshall to me. To me it sounds that most of his studio tone involves a pedal of some kind.

So is he supposedly cranking the small amps AND hitting them with a fuzz pedal?
