Love that performance, I've got it on CD with the "Past Lives" double album. The version of NIB they play is just amazing.

Hands down, my favorite version of War Pigs I've ever heard. So dark and powerful, and Eeeeeeeevil!

watching the clip of war pigs is proof that i have been playing that song wrong for the past 10 years, the notation i have is from "guitar for the practicing musician" and i would think someone like Andy Aledort would be more accurate...

There's a reason they're considered one of the best ever. Fantastic.

Ozzy was a madman,...huh,....................IS a madman.

I call it metal, but whatever. IMO, their peak was in '71 with Master of Reality but '70 was definately a great year for Sabbath too.

Bill Ward is one of THE great classic era drummers. He does not get the respect he deserves. His style is so untradional - he actually riffs along with the Iommi instead of doing a straight rhythm underneath. Amazing.

Bill Ward is a fabulous drummer. Black Sabbath swings and grooves like crazy because of him. It always surprises me that so many modern metal bands are influenced by them, yet none of them seem to swing and groove like that. For the modern guys it's all about 16 notes.... Just my opinion.

And they had solid improv skills as well.

I agree 100%. So much of metal moved to a more mechanical/industrial sound that, while intersting, seems less human and soulful to me. Sabbath has had, and still has, a big influence on my playing and feel. I love their sense of space, too. I mostly dig the BS -> SBS era and thes elive clips underscore why.

Bill Ward is one of the most underrated of all time!! The drums on the first couple Sabbath albums pretty much OWN. He kinda fell off a bit, sufered from Iommi's coked out production techniques. Kinda wish VOl 4 had the first album drum sound instead of the wierdly wimpy sound it ended up with.

But yeah gimme Bill Ward ANYDAY over any "modern" metal drummer. Dood had the FUNK, the swing, and the POWER to get it done.

The recent thread on "extreme" drummers made me laugh. These modern super technical doods leave me BEYOND cold. They always seem so locked in place.. using economy of motion, hardly raise their arm to hit... soooooooooo lifeless and dull. Always amazes me when i go see or we play with other "metal" bands, these types just sit LOCKED in place..barely raising their arms and have NO POWER at all (let alone groove). I guess they are all used to triggers? but in a live setting that is some WIMPY ****.

Agreed on Bill. NEVER got his (long overdue) props. Amazing drummer is the only way to put it. That clip of War Pigs, WOW! :JAM

Now let's continue to enjoy, from the same show I think.
