Blackmore is a living legend and he knows it. The HOF can do little to bolster that legend. Snubbing the HOF only adds to his mystique as the dark genius. Smart move in any case.

He attempted to make a nice point, then ruined it by saying, "I just want to make money."

Ritchie has always been a crank. I would have been surprised by any other response from him. Of course, Deep Purple isn't inducted yet, so it is premature for him to shun the induction ceremony.

Blackmores attitude rubs me the wrong way. I feel the same about Robert Plant calling that reporter a "schmuck" last week. We gave these guys their lifestyle and they never to do a real days work in their lives. Sure they are talented, but they were very lucky too. Eff em...

Touring the world and producing original music for almost 50 years isn't real work?

If Ritchie really just wanted to make money, he wouldn't have devoted the last 15 years of his life to a kind of music that sells far less than Deep Purple or Rainbow ever did.

Blackmore's always said a lot of weird stuff in his interviews, I always take his statements with a big grain of salt.

Good on Blackmore for telling it how it is - shove it!

The RnR HOF is a joke on a good day.

Deep Purple will always be and it's the RnR HOF that actually need them. Not the other way round.

Good for Blackmore. Whatever his reasons, it is good to hear him state his true thoughts.

The HOF should rename itself. They lost me when Madonna was inducted. One could make the argument 'what is r-n-r'.....it sure isn't her, at least not to me and most people I have discussed the issue with. We visited it once, and were inundated with 'performer displays/costumes etc' who were anything but r-n-r.

Is there something in TGP's water of late? Are we really so jaded/prejudiced/ignorant that some here cannot view the career of a professional musician as a legitimate profession?

Having worked with many artists of their level over the past two years, I totally agree with your opinion on Blackmore. But as to the Plant question (and yes he can be just as bad...) calling a reporter a schmuck is different entirely. 9 times out of 10 these "reporters" are no more than wannabes who force their way into the party to ask the same dumbass questions they have been asking for twenty years. I don't blame Robert or Jimmy one bit for treating them as if they are schmucks and calling them out on it.

You ask a stupid question, be prepared for the onslaught.

I have also interviewed many artists/sports figures of this level and have often crafted the questions to what was current. The question of the Zep reunion has been answered and was answered A LONG TIME AGO. Get on with it and ask something relevant.

Now their treatment of fans and your point is something I entirely get.

As someone who owns a publishing company and am a "journalist" by trade, if he asked about a Zep reunion, he absolutely did his job and asked the right question. I never saw the exchange, but if that's what he asked, he absolutely did his job. That's what people care about. That's what they want to know. That's what they want to happen. That's what those who read whatever copy he prints/publishes want to know.

So, again, if that was the question, that was a very fair, valid, good and reasonable question.

No, he said he was happy just to be able to pay the bills. Isn't that what we're all after?

You can't help but admire Blackmore's decision to shun such a farce, run by idiots who think they're doing 'legends' a favor by allowing them into a BS popularity contest. A contest those legends won years ago. It was depressing for me to see Jeff Beck ham it up with Metallica at the HOF. Utterly embarrassing to endure Stephen Stills' acceptance speech, fully constipated with bloated self-importance. Ultimately rewarding to hear Mike Love slam everybody during his anti-acceptance speech.

While Blackmore has a long standing reputation as being a right bastard, he's certainly mellowed over the last couple of decades. He gives plenty of interviews, he even smiles these days. ;) Little doubt he has a dry sense of humor.
I don't take exception to his comments. If nominated, did anyone think he'd show? He's never been big on that stuff.

I have been a charter member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since before it was built. In other words, I donate a few dollars every year. I have no influence but I support it just as much to support the city of Cleveland (I grew up 20 miles east of the city) and its role in the history of rock as I do the museum aspect of the facility. The Hall of Fame portion suffers from the same trials as any hall to maintain validity and credibility. :sarcasmUntil we come up with a system of statistics to measure musicians like baseball players we will continue to have these disagreements. Even then, most records will be marked with an asterisk for the possibility of being aided by performance enhancing drugs!;)
