I recently acquired one and I'm really enjoying it. I did notice that with my unit, the echo volume reaches unity with the dry signal but never really exceeds it. Is this by design? I'm wondering if this is the case with other units or if it's unique to mine. Thanks.

The DM-1 I had could exceed the dry signal, but also brought with it a good amount of extra noise, so I ended up leaving it right at about unity, as the noise was manageable at that level.

Yeah...mine is pretty quite. That's got to be why. I really like the color it adds to the dry signal even without engaging the echo. 'Makes for a nice preamp.

You don't see those often! Have you compared it to a DM-2?

I've never had one to compare but after 15 years trawling effects forums I've only ever heard the DM-2 is more desirable due to form factor and noise. IIRC the DM-1 is not built around the MN3005 but some other chip, possibly even the SAD1024
