... either a city or a region that one could visit within a reasonable driving distance, where is it?

pfft, not where I live that's for sure...

Perhaps Chicago? Make'n Music would be a destination store for me.

    Yep, I'd go Ultrasound too.
Chicago would be my 2nd choice.
(between Makenmusic and Chicago Music Exchange...you boutique needs WOULD be covered...you could also go to Flynn's in nearby Evanston to check out the Carr collection)

Nashville would be a contender for Vintage Guitar capital, but not amps (although I bet you could find some of the best amps in the world here in private hands). I'm thinking NYC also for amps, but as regions go Southern California deserves consideration - Dumble, Two Rock, Fender, Mesa and others all call it home.

    Three choices:
    1.Winter Anaheim NAMM Hall E
One place that gathers the many of the best of the small builders in one place.
    or
    Loni Spectors Amp Shows
    2. LA in October
    3. NJ (The NY Show) coming up May 9th
Actually, the Amp shows may surpass NAMM, UltraSound, and Maken for the breadth of its wares. If you're into amps, highly recommended as a worthwhile trip from almost anywhere.
    4. If you live in a metro area and organize your own ToneFest, you can actually draw an amazing group of gear into one place at one time to check out with your TGP brethren. Its been done with great success in many areas.

New York/NJ offers you probably the largest number of Boutique/high end dealers in about a 50 mile radius.

    UltraSound NYC
    Rudy's Music NYC
    30th Street NYC
    Matt Umanov Guitars NYC
    Music Zoo Little Neck, NY
    Black Creek New Paltz NY
PG Music Inc (PedalGeek) New Hyde Park, NY
    Lark Street Music NJ
    Russo Music Center Hamilton, NJ

Have not even scratched the surface ... and of course there is the NY/NJ AMP show -- a must for the high end amp fan.
