watching a bit of season 2 west wing and on comes brothers in arms.
i forget how much i love knopflers tone on this song. and as much as its about touch, any idea what pedal would give you that super dry, responsive dirty tone?

I think any mild overdrive will get you close - maybe barbers, tubescreamers, etc? Something with pretty solid mids would work. Also add a delay after it obviously. And of course use your fingers to play. Most of MK's tone is his finger style of playing -- That's why he sounds so expressive because all the little nuances are part of that style. It's more key than any part of his equipment chain.

He was using a Les Paul and a Jim Kelley amp with the attenuator for "Money for Nothing".

I'm pretty sure that one the pickups on his les paul was wired out-of-phase (or he had a switch that reversed it) for the Brothers in Arms track.
