Brown Turds vs. Blue Turds

I recently checked all the brown turds I pulled from my '71 DR for dc leakage and capacitance. Every one tested essentially perfect for both.

I have my '74 VC on the bench and I tested the 2 blue turds for dc leakage and they don't leak. However they both tested about half the proper capacitance. The death cap was a blue turd and that one tests good in both departments.

I wonder if the negative rap on brown turds was valid in any way. I don't have an esr meter. Is there a negative rap on blue turds?

If you had real turds in your amp, that woud be a cause for concern.
However, the negative rep is undeserved for both colors,as they are in great sounding amps.

I think comparing brown and blue mallorys is like comparing polyester and polyprop caps. They work the same but there are subtle differences in the tone. Personally I havent been able to tell the difference so it might just be internet BS. Then again, my hearing is shot anyway so let your own ears be the judge.

We have been getting some of that lately. It was -15 deg f here this morning in central Iowa and we are a ways south of you. It's likely to get there again tonite. The Honda and the pickup started OK but it took ten miles or so to get the pickup up to operating temp and get some heat out of the ducting.

But never on a consistent basis like youse guys get. Staying warm is a good thing.

Scott, yer killen me....
