I'm getting my daughter an inexpensive used car on Thursday. I'm going to have a quick check done by a local mechanic. The car is a 2002 with 107,000 miles. The dealer offers a service contract. Cost is $100 and is good for 90 days.

I generally stay away from service contracts but an wondering whether this one might make sense.

    Thoughts?

Depends what it covers, but odds are pretty good there's something wrong with that car that will need fixing.

How far is your mechanic going into the car? Maybe you can ask him what he thinks.

What does the service contract cover? If it's bumper to bumper, go for it, but if it's drive train only, I'd pass depending on what the inspection reveals.

And the lemon law doesn't protect with more than 100k miles, so it may be wise, depending on coverage.

I thought the lemon law was only for new cars. Used are As Is by default.

It varies state to state with some states having a form of protection and others not but most all have a mileage/year limitation where after a certain number it no longer applies
