Hi guys. I'm considering buying a piece of gear from Australia (to California). It's around $4000 us dollars. Will I have to pay import duty on this? Or extra taxes? If you any tips, please post. thanks for your help.

Forgot to mention, the gear is second-hand and from a private party, not a business.

One thing to look into perhaps, given the amount of gear made in the US - with regard to vintage Fenders/Gibsons etc, I've been told that if it was originally made in the USA, you don't have to pay import duties if you are bringing it back into your country of origin.

Sales taxes - I very much doubt you'll have to pay the 10% Australian GST (sales tax). For instance, when I sell my Australian company services or goods to overseas clients, it's always GST exempt as it's 'for export'. As I understand it that's still the correct way to do it.

Whether you still get levied any California sales tax - I don't know.

Thanks for responding. Unfortunately, the item is made in Europe so I can't use that tactic.
