buying pickups

Hi!

I'm about to spring for some new pickups for my guitar. My question is:

How can one tell if a pickup is sounding the way it is supposed to sound? Is it possible to tell if it has been de-gaussed/ re-gaussed?

Can improper handling during transit alter a pickup's sound?

thanks!:)

I'm no expert on the subject, but I'd guess there is little anyone can do to a pickup to alter its magnetic characteristics - other than actually flipping the magnet.

You shouldn't expect any magnetic shifts by shipping a pickup, either.

If you are buying pick ups from a store they should be packed well enough, like double box foam etc. that dropping and throwing around shouldn't be an issue.

i live overseas and am thinking of springing for some bill lawrences. im worried that careless postpeople might ruin the pickups somewhat by the time the p'ups get to me. :(

I wouldn't worry about it. I just got my Kinman Broadcaster pick ups all the way from New Zealand and it was perfectly packed to handly anything but an elephant stepping on it. Pick ups in formfitted foam in plastic box surrounded by peanuts in carton box. I imagine most stores will do something similar.
