Just got a Mesa Transatlantic TA-15 head but don't have a cab yet. Wondering if you all had any thoughts on:
  1. Cab manufacturers that are cheap but sound good.
  2. Should I just go with Mesa's TA cab and erase this post?
  3. Speaker reccommendations - from experience in the olde voxy sounding realm.

I've always liked avatar. And they have been running a special on 212s. I prefer greenbacks or wgs green berets in almost everything but alcino blues are another good choice. I think I would cough up the extra 200 for the bogner cab or get an avatar. Unfortunately I only have experience with mesas rec cab. It would be interesting to compare a lonestar, transatlantic cab and royal to the bogner. I do have a marshall 412 with greenies, a mesa with v30s and am longing for a bogner straight. My experience with 212s has been with avatar, marshall 1936, vox with greenies. I liked the avatar a lot.

I have an Avatar 2x10 w/ Celestion Golds and a Mesa Mini Rec (Celestion V30) for my TA-15. Both sound amazing. I find the Mini Rec cab (closed back) sounds better with more distorted tones in the Hi 1 and Hi 2 channels and "good enough" compared to the open back for cleaner tones (though the 2x10 does sound glorious - Celestion Golds are amazing).

I heard mine through a Avatar cab with Celestion speakers, but I ended up buying a Mesa cabinet with the Black Shadow speaker, which I thought sounded good.

Go with the 23" Transatlantic 1x12, it'll look smart and sound great. Even the C90 sounds good in that cab.

Full disclosure: I have the 23" Lone Star cab, which is basically identical (maybe an inch shorter) and I just got a TA 15. It sounds awesome through that cab. Mesa cabs are some of the best out there, and unless you're really trying to pinch pennies with the Avatar, it's easily worth it to get the Mesa.

Of course, upgrading the speaker will sound even better. I've been really digging it with an ET65 in that very same cab. A Celestion Gold will sound even better (I have one in my LSS combo, and the TA sounded amazing through that) but that's a whole other expense.

I also have a Gold on my LSS 1x12 combo. It does sound very nice compared to the C90. It seems that people actually like the C90 in the new TA 23" cab, which I find interesting. Sweetwater has that cab with a C90 for under $400 with free shipping. Hit me with some truth - good enough with the C90?
Or,
Go with a 2x10" cab? That is the question I continue to have - what would a 2x10 offer that I can't get with a 1x12 cab?
Loving the help here.

Lots of folks swear by the 2x10 thing, I have no experience with it. I'm sure a good 2x10 would sound fantastic. Mesa doesn't seem to make one, so you'd be looking at a visual mismatch, if that's important to you. The 23" cab is nice and compact, so that's a plus.

As far as the C90 goes, I am not a huge fan of them... but when I tried out my 23" LS cab, it sounded good enough that I would have kept it that way for a while if I hadn't already had a speaker on hand to swap it with. I like to tinker, so that's what I did. But if you really want the Voxy goods, you'd get a lot closer with a good Alnico speaker.

I guess I could just get the 23" w/ C90 and then see which amp (LSS or TA15) vibes best with the two different cabs and switch it all around since I have a Gold living in the LSS combo as it is.
Thanks for the advice. I am happy that the Mesa love is alive on TGP.

I've tried a few cabs with the TA-15 and this (Lonestar 1x12) ended the search.
