Hey guys, I'm getting quite a lot of noise through my setup and was wondering how I work out whether the problem is with my cable or with my pickups?

I have an American Strat so I'm presuming the pickups should be good.

Also when I turn the volume all the way down the noise stops. Is this a sign that it's the pickups?

    Thanks

    Do you have quality cables?
    How long is the cable?
Is it buffered between you and the amp?
Is the amp noisy with humbuckers?
Is the wiring in the guitar good?
Does it stop when you touch the strings or any other metal?

It could be so many things.....

I have no idea except for the last one, it quietens when I touch the strings but doesn't go completely

    Then it is properly grounded.

Do you have any pedals between the guitar and the amp?

If it changes as you move around then it's likely the pickups. Single coil pickups tend to pick up noise.

True. Does the noise cancel out if you put it on the middle position? 2 coils should cancel the noise out.

Well I think the problem could easily be the amp. Most amps, especially when you crank them, can get noisy. And you could enhance it by using long bad quality cables.
