Is there any benefit to putting a spring loaded canister over a phase inverter other than to protect the tube? My Boogie doesn't have one. I am playing around with a Top Hat which seems slightly less dark w/out a can on the PI.

    Thanks

It's not absolutely necessary to use tube shields over ANY tube. They can help reduce interference/noise in some of the higher gain circuits in an amp, but the PI has such low gain that it probably doesn't help at all.

Some people find that removing the shields improves tone.

mike,do they prolong tube life by protecting the tube from the speaker vibration? my amp definitly sounds better with them off.

The tone on this Top Hat I have is definitely better with the can off the PI. I am going to try the V! as well.

    thanks Mike.

I don't see how they can possibly protect the tubes from vibration.
