Can I make my 5e3 gig-loud and it still sound like a 5e3?

I have a great 5e3 -- in fact, it's this one. I love the way it sounds, but it's not quite loud enough to hang with my band. As a result, I've been thinking of selling it. But I don't want to. What I want is for it to be a little louder.

Right now it's got an old eminence alnico speaker (Eminence 12ALP) in it that I think is pretty inefficient. I was thinking of putting a Texas Heat ceramic in it. That should give me more headroom, right?

It's currently got NOS glass in it that sounds good, but maybe I should put something else in there (JJ 6V6's, for instance) that might be a little louder -- should I?

If I were to do that stuff, would it drastically alter the way the amp sounds?

What do you think -- sell the amp or try to get a little more headroom out of it?

You might want to try a higher wattage speaker and substitute the 12ax7 for a 12at7. This should give you a bit more headroom.

Aren't Dumble's designed to give you the 5e3 tone at band friendly volumes?

Try both. I'd probably go 12AY7 or 5751. Though honestly I think a more efficient speaker would make a bigger difference.

    G12H30 celestion maybe? 103db?

Higher efficiency speaker will have a bigger effect than any tube changes.

Maybe you need the Bad Cat Unleash? Or the Victoria Double Deluxe?

I agree with Mike. A more efficient speaker would give you the biggest change. A lower gain preamp tube may help the amp sound cleaner, but not necessarily louder.

    Try a tilt back stand?
Get if up off the floor tilted to offer more sound directed towards yourself & fellow band members. (knee's do not have ears)

Mic it to the PA for audience levels needed. Add guitar to stage monitors for each member if needed?
I know lots of guys that use that approach even at big outdoor venues.

Tungsten Buckwheat is the answer to your question imo.

I'm hoping the Bad Cat "Unleash" will do exactly this. It would be a blast playing some vintage 1x12 combos at band volume.

i'm already tilting it back and, while i can and will mic it on gigs, i need it to be loud enough to hang at rehearsals and for quick grab and go jams too (right now, it's not)

    How about a 2x12 or 4x12 cab?

are you just having trouble keeping it clean or are you getting buried even when cranked? i'm in a loud rock band that practices in a small space. i don't use my 5E3 very often but when i do i have trouble keeping it clean for sure, but i still can't go up past say 4 or 5 before i'm too loud, with a Tele or LP. i have a 12AY7 in V1 (per the original Fender schematic) and a Jensen C12N (RI) speaker. this is a rather bright speaker so maybe that's part of it, but i'm saying i think it's definitely possible as long as you don't need to stay very clean.

I have run my Vic 5e3/20112 thru the 15" in my Vic Regal. It's a 102db speaker or some such versus the jensen in the deluxe which is maybe 95. The step up in volume is very noticeable and it still sounds like the deluxe. Made a big difference.

Oh and BTW, the Regal with the same tubes (6v6) and even with the efficient speaker seems maybe even quieter than the deluxe with its inefficient speaker.

weber 12F125 in mine helped alot VS the stock speaker. cleaner and louder due to efficiency and the loss of speaker distortion. I think getting it off the floor is also big. Beyond that??? I really want to try a Celestion Gold or Blue in this amp at some point.
