I have a modded 1987xl small chassis that I am have a custom combo cab built for and am curious if I can pull a single el34 and change output impedence down a step to run a single 12"? Do I need to change output transformers, re bias a little cold, or what? It has MM transformers. Just looking at options to make this into a low watt grab and go combo...
Thanks!

Uh, no. That won't work. They are a push-pull team and taking one out destroys that.

You might consider a pair of THD Yellowjackets. They're EL84's with a special base to plug into larger tube sockets. Measure your clearance first. They make a short base version for tighter fits.

Install a Lar-Mar master volume in the extra speaker jack hole. You can always reverse it later when you want to sell it.
It's the most natural sounding master ever.

the ol' "one wire mod" to make it a 2204-type amp with a master is another way to get marshally goodness at sane volumes.

hell, a single inefficient speaker like a g12-65 with the amp in normal "plexi" mode, using a pedal or two to add crunch, can sound really good without blowing up the room.
