Can someone please tell me why I want to make or use "IR"s?

After wondering what the heck "IR" stood for, I now learn it means "impulse response" and is, if I understand correctly, step one in creating a simulated mic'ed speaker cabinet, and probably a microphone sim, too.

How and why do you smart guys use these things? What software do I need?

Cheers.

They're also good for making your piezo pickup on your acoustic sound like it's mic'd up instead. There's getting to be more IR loading pedals out there. Torpedo CAB and Logidy Epsi are 2 that I have. There's also now the AMT Pangea and a bunch of the higher end modellers use IR's and can load custom ones too.

Impulses certainly are a handy thing to wrap your head around these days. I have done a few tutorial style blog posts that may help you a bit more

Hope this helps!

and here's a quick pedal demo I did that was recorded direct using an impulse response, but sounds fairly 'realistic' in my opinion!
