Hi, watching the REM documentary, Michael Stipe said he got his hernia and needed the surgery because of singing, pushing his stomach while doing so.

Is this true? Can you get a hernia from singing?

The reason I ask is often, my stomach hurts while singing and i don't want to injure myself.

he may have exacerbated an existing condition by the way he sings. my surgeon told me that most men will have some type of hernia procedure in their lifetime. weird little pockets of abdominal weakness can be injured by all sorts of activity.

If you sing to your overweight girlfriend while you carry her around in your arms, you may get hernia.

It's not the pain in the stomach you need to worry about, it's the pain lower down at the abdomen pushing on a weak spot near your groin you should be alert to. If your stomach hurts, it probably means your muscles are weak (which could lead to a hernia). But yes, singing or coughing hard can cause a hernia to pop, I've done it both ways (moving your gear could also do it....).
