I just grabbed a used one and have a question.

When I use an external tap to control the modulation, I notice none of the other buttons work.

So, for example, if I press the bright switch or tap or whatever, it won't work.

Is that normal?

What kind of tap tempo button are you using? It is a normally open switch?

Okay, I just did some experiments with my CCD. Using a normally open tap switch, it works fine. Using a normally closed tap switch, it behaves exactly as you describe. It looks like your tap switch is normally closed, but it needs to be normally open for this pedal.
