In an ongoing thread here about difficulties with one small volume, high-priced luthier, I said that I had had good luck buying guitars which were made by well established builders who had sorted out their teething problems and I said I had not had good luck with an early Cardinal Magpie which Sam Evans made for me. Someone asked what the problem was and the discussion about it started to derail the original thread so I asked that any further comments be by PM.

Sam PM'ed me and asked me what he could do to make it right. I had already returned it once and the problem wasn't fixed so I was reluctant to go through that again. He told me to name the solution I wanted and he would do it free of charge. He offered to replace the entire body, replace the pickup, redo the neck (which was perfect) - anything to make it right. We wrote back and forth a little and arrived at a solution which I think meets both our needs. Thank you Sam.

What's this? Human beings solving a problem by communicating? Weird.

I hope it turns out the way you want when you get it back.

Very glad to hear this. I've corresponded with Sam a few times and always found him to be very accommodating. Please keep us posted in this thread once the fix is in.

I would describe my experience with Sam and hunting for the right bridge pickup in a Cardinal Zenith as “above and beyond.” Top notch.

Yep, Sam is a good guy and is passionate about his guitars.

Your story doesn't surprise me one bit. Glad it worked out.

Sam at Cardinal built me the first Bantam. We worked closely on the specs. It is a great guitar. We had many conversations and I met him in person a couple times at industry events. He was/is a true gentleman. I would highly recommend Cardinal Instruments. Knowing Sam, I am surprised you didn't just pick up the phone and talk with him. He is very easy to talk to.

Sam Evans is ACES. A most wonderful human being and a luthier who strives to be better everyday. His guitars have a certain something that I find inspiring.

Sorry - didn't see your reply. We did talk a couple of times early on but even talking on the phone sometimes the messages get garbled.

I first met Sam when I snatched up one of his earliest guitars, Cedar Fever #3. This is exactly what I'd expect from him. Sam is a great person, and if I ever wind up in Austin, I'm going to him for food recommendations.
