Can anyone tell me how these differ tonally?
G12-65 is much thicker and smoother, more low end punch,m tighter sounding. More aggressive som may say. While the Greenback could be said to be brighter, thinner, clearer, breaks up sooner, compresses more. Both are great, great speakers.
Pretty much says it all, assuming you mean the M Greenback, that is! The cone of the 65 is assumed to be stiffer and that combined with the H-screen dustcap gives you a cleaner speaker yet with a less detailed high end. The higher wattage and the H-screen also gives you a smoother tone allround.
I believe they both use the same 1777 cone. It think the green back is actually more aggressive sounding but the rest of the description seem right.
Well, maybe not aggressive in the true sense of the word. GB = more vintage sounding, G12-65 is tighter and more modern sounding to me.
