Celestion G1280 vs Classic Lead 80

    Are these the same speaker?
I replaced the Mesa Black Shadow speaker in my F-50 combo with a CL80. The Black Shadow has a sticker that says Celestion G1280.

I can't turn it up very loud until tomorrow but at very low volume it sounds the same.

They are not the same speaker. They are quite similar but not identical. The Mesa is made in England the CL 80 China. The Mesa has the vent in the magnet like the old G12 80's did. The CL 80 doesn't. There may also be some other construction differences that I'm not aware of. Anyway sound wise I think the Mesa C 90 has a bit more bottom end and a bit more low mids. To me the CL 80 sounds like an MC 90 with a narrower focus. Less highs, less lows, slightly higher mid bump. Not a huge difference but noticeable. I like them both actually.

Thanks. I am looking for a tone change exactly like you described in the CL80.

I did a google search for a celestion G1280. When I click on the links it takes me to a Classic Lead 80.

    Weird.

They are just showing you the current model. The old G12 80 had the vent in the magnet like the Mesa. I've owned a few of those. I seem to remember that at one point Mesa was saying that the MC 90 was a recreation of the old G12 80. I've owned 2 different versions of the G12 80. One had the 1777 cone like the Mesa. The other had the 444 cone like a Vintage 30. The 444 cone version was darker. The 1777 cone version was very close to the Mesa.

OK, I tested it a volume today. Tried the CL80 and the swapped it with the G1280.
They are very close but the CL80 has a tighter bottom with the Mesa. I like it better in this amp than the G1280.

    Thanks for the the help.
