    Everyone raves about the Greenback's dirty tones (with good reason) but what about clean tones? Are there any definitive recordings of Greenback cleans? Can they deliver a gorgeous clean sound or do they trade off clenas for dirt?

    Just wondering because I love Hendrix's clean tones (I know some of this is Fender on record) and also John Frusciante's clean tones with RHCP. They have a beautiful high end sheen that I usually associated with other speakers.

    I liked the WGS Green Beret in the 5e3 clone I had...nice woody tone at low volumes...

    That was my take on the G12H30. It is tight sounding to me especially compared to the M. However, my fav amp for Wind Cries Mary is my Clark Beaufort 5E3 with a Celestion Blue.

    Well,

    to answer the question as posted, yes the greenback is great for clean tone.

    Is it the shimmery sparkle of an old Fender, not at all. Need an alnico speaker for that.

    The fun thing about our favorite albums;

    Is it a fender, marshall or vox? Yes!

    Rivera amps has a group of youtube videos that compare a lot of great speakers on a crummy sounding Rivera amp. At least you can get an idea of speaker flavors.

    Good luck!

    I absolutely love the greenback speaker, from its jangly clean sparkle to it's dirty rock n roll side. It's ALL good. I was frankly shocked, the first time I heard this speaker in a Vox amp. What's the need or hype all about to install a Blue? The greenback seems to be the perfect speaker as far as I'm concerned. I have a 2x12 cab with G12H30's that I run with my Scorpion head that is going to get at least one greenback if the DB ratings are close. If not, I'll be replacing the G12H30's with greenbacks.

    I agree. There isn't really much the speaker can't do.

    Of course, there ARE many variations on the speaker. Many don't sound very good. But when you DO get one of the "good" ones, you realize why its a speaker found in probably 80% of all famous guitar tones.

    I think it's unlikely to be to that degree. And even if it's plentiful most likely that's because that's what the amps came with (possibly even what was available at the time), not the preference of the guitarist.
