So I'm looking for a cheap, true-bypass distortion box that can be tossed in a gig bag, powered with a battery and achieve a reasonably varied number of low to medium gain tones. The RAT2 and EHX Hot Tubes RI seem to fit the bill - any insights into which one might work better when running a clean amp?

Just FYI, I've tried the EHX Soul Food and wasn't a fain of the exaggerated, mid-range boost that happened once you got enough gain going.

If you need medium-high gain for less than $100, then the RAT2 or MXR Super badass are good options into a clean amp.

There's also the new DOD 250 reissues. Less gain and compression, but might work for you depending on your amp/guitar.

I vote for the Hot Tubes...very Red Llama like crunch and stacks very well with everything.
