    Hey guys-

I'm looking for a tube pre in rackmount or pedal form for clean/slightly overdriven Fender/Vox sound, to A/B with the pre in my Marshall head. It would be cool to be able to get a nice sound driving it with my TS-9. I thought about the Sansamp pedal, but I doubt it would sound very good ODing it.

    Ideas?

You can find used Mesa Studio preamps on ebay. Cleans are the best you can get out of a rack pre for the money (3-400 used), in my opinion.

Hmm, the Mesa seems a little overkill for me I think. Know anything about the Matchless Hotbox?

Interesting. I like brands I've never heard of. I'll check these out!

Fatbox or Fatdrive? I can't find anything called a Fatbox. Thanks!

    Ah cool :)

The stuff I've been looking at so far look pretty cool, but the majority of them look like they're not intended to be connected directly to a poweramp, other than the Mesa of course. Most feedback I've read involves using them as pre-preamp tone shapers/gain boosters, etc. I'd love to read otherwise!

    Or a Mesa V-Twin rackmount.

What about the Formula pre? It's probably just as overkill but if I'm gonna spend that kinda cash I might as well get something flexible!

Yeah, I saw that, but the reviews I've read and entries on forums don't really mention people using them directly into a poweramp. Doesn't mean it can't be done, I've tried using a TS-9 straight into a 50/50 poweramp once, but yielded less than stellar results.

Comparing a solidstate overdrive pedal to a 2 tube fully operational preamp w/ full EQ is a stretch. The TS-9 isn't a preamp, it's an overdrive pedal.

The very start of the description lets you know it's first and foremost a tube preamp...

Go with one of the Alembic Preamps. They are made for bass or guitar. The F1X is a single channel version, and the more popular F2B has two chwnnels that can be used in stereo or bridged for some overdriven sounds. This is the preamp that David Gilmour, among others, uses. This is pure Fender tone, actually the preamp section from the Fender Showman.
    FWIW,
    Rick

I wasn't really trying to compare, how could I, I've never tried the pre in question?

Now that, is exactly what I'm talking about. Gilmour's clean tone is immaculate!

Check this out, Trace Elliot makes a copy of the F-1X, with an adjustable gain/master, mid shift, and dual preamp tubes.

They're both based on the same circuit, I wonder how this one sounds?

Definitely worth looking into. I've also used an old Demeter Bass Preamp as a clean platform for pedals that sounded great.
