So this might seem odd, so let me give you the background:

Yesterday I played a big Canada Day show. There were fireworks.

Flying back home today, my pedalboard got flagged by security, and when a swab was done, it showed positive for both explosives and some illegal drugs. I’m guessing the same transport tractor that lugged our gear must have also been used for moving the fireworks earlier that day.. as for the drugs, who knows what might have happened on that stage or what some road crew person did... neither is me!

I had to be taken for questioning, patting down, my stuff scanned multiple times... I almost missed my flight home!

I’m flying again in two days and need to figure out how to rid my pedalboard of any trace amounts of explosives or drugs.

OP - If I were you, I’d tear it all the way down, vacuum it, then clean everything with a damp cloth, then alcohol wipes.

Lol - yeah, it sounds more exciting than my life ever gets.

Was thinking today, though... I'm pretty sure the explosives must be related to the fireworks, but the drugs... I do have a few used pedals on my board, so I guess you never know what used gear might have "seen" with its previous owner.

This makes sense.. I'm wondering about the velcro, though - I wonder if I have any hope of getting everything out, or if I should rip it all out and do new velcro... sigh.

A little water & a scrub brush, then vacuum and a quick prayer. That should do the trick.

    :beer

Really though, you’re probably worrying a bit more than you need to. I’m sure if you clean then vacuum it, it’ll be ok.

Use a stiff toothbrush to clean the Velcro, then spray it with Febreze.
Use Windex & paper towels on the pedals (spray the towels, not the pedals!)

Don’t use alcohol or anything like that on certain pedals.. I wiped off a whole EHX electric mistress pedal face using this technique...

I usually just “blow” the white residue off of my pedals.
Interesting story OP. That’s one for good conversation.

Yeah, I mostly find it funny...

but I also know that the took down a bunch of notes and even submitted a report to the police and authorities, so I feel a little trepidatious about what it might look like to get in trouble a second time in one week (also, I'll actually have 3 flights for 3 shows in different parts of the country over this Friday-Saturday and Sunday, without much time to clean/worry about this stuff, so I figure I better clean things now rather than risking a whole bunch of trouble while I'm at home now!)

But it is a funny story. I'm about as clean living as they come and outside of being a musician, my main day job is being an elementary school teacher - not really the drugs and explosives type, lol!

Use an air compressor and blow that entire pedalboard off under high pressure.
