I'm ok with the notes, but what is he using to get that in your face distortion? Anyone play this song. I've been playing it for years but I need to get that sound right. Some kind of fuzz?

well...you notice it's rather dry....hence it sounds more "in your face"

there's definitely some compression on it...probably a MXR DynaComp being it was 70s....probably a humbucker...neck position. I'm sure someone will come up with the distortion box....that could be an MXR also

I'm going to guess the guitar was an ES-335.

I play that one (note for note of course) at gigs. I think I read somewhere that that tone was the guitar plugged directly into the console, somehow overloading the preamp. I can't remember where I heard that though, so I may be imagining that.

I just go for the dirtiest tone on my pedalboard. Close enough. (Actually, it sounds better -- which isn't too difficult).

It sounds like a direct recording--maybe with a fuzz in line, or maybe just overloading at the board as JoeB63 suggested.

This is my feeling about it too. There's no "amp-ness" to the distortion, it's so smooth.

Yeah its almost like Reelin' in the Years sort of a no amp vibe.

Here's a studio recording of my band playing that tune. Skip to 2:14 if you want to avoid listening to the whole sappy tune ;).

IIRC, I used a Carr Rambler with an OCD pedal for the dirt. I wasn't trying to match the guitar tone on the original --- just trying to get in the general region.

    Enjoy!

OK, I like the song too. Though I would never admit that in a public forum.

It was a 335 plugged directly into the board, overloading the pre's.

That is a great solo. I never really realized how overdriven that tone was. That OCD in the clips doesn't get it. I think a fuzz is required.

That was gonna be my guess...or I might have guessed guitar>fuzz>direct. To me that's a good example of a peculiar guitar tone that makes the song, of course IMHO.
