Has anyone compared the Barber Direct Drive to the Zvex Box of Rock or Distortron?

Not at the same time but I have previously owned the Distortron and Compact Direct Direct.

From memory the main difference is more bass and less midrange sharpness/boxey-ness in the Distortron. The CDD might be described as more articulate while the Distortron is looser and raw.

Been a while since I tried the Box of Rock, but I didn't care for its over driven tone. Loose low end and I think it was a little splatty on the treble, Barber CDD is more my type of pedal its much tighter not harsh in the highs and has plenty of gain for hard rock tones!

I've had the box of rock, the cdd and have the cdd v3. The Barbers sound much better to my ears. I never liked the BOR. The cdd v3 is the one that I like best.

What are the differences between the CDD V2 and V3?

The Barber Direct Drive would win most miab shootouts...except against a Barber Burn Unit (BUSS). That would probably be a draw...

I’m concerned the CDD V3 might have too much low end with some amps and there’s no way to turn the bass down?

Does the CDD V2 not have enough low end and the V3 fixed that?

The Barber DDC sounds way better than the BOR or Distortron.
I prefer the V2. It has enough low end.
The V2 has more bite and not as rounded treble. I think it replicates my Marshall amp
    tone slightly better.
The V3 thickens single notes more with the added low end.
You can dial out some low end with the tone knob. Its not too bassy.

FYI... I only want to use low to med gain settings for 60’s JTM45 - Plexi Marshall sounds.

Low - medium gain tones are there...

“We packed the most desirable sounds of the Direct Drive, Direct Drive Low Gain (LG) and Super Sport into one clean and compact pedal. If you like the sound of the early UK combos with kt66 tubes, it's in there. If you bleed for the sound of a 4 input head with a wall of 4x12 cabs, it's in there. If you live for the sound of a carefully modified master volume gem from the early 80's, it's in there too. The Compact Direct Drive uses a simple layout of three knobs, a gain toggle and a harmonics toggle to delivery it's wide array from elastic-bells of GZ34-sag, to the hells-bells of a tight EL34-crush. “

My CDD works great with all sorts of amps. But with my JTM45 RI, the BOR is a perfect match.

IMO that is not the CDD's strength. I've used the Distortron for years and it is great for lower gain, edge of breakup stuff. The BOR would be too, but I frequently prefer to use the #2 bass setting on the Distortron, which is a light bass cut vs. the BOR. I've never been happy with the Barber used like that.

If you wanted higher gain the CDD would start pushing out in front. The ZVex gets splatty and loose with the gain up, whereas the CDD starts waking up and singing.
