Any good books or dvd's covering composition that you know about?
Jon Damian's book is pretty good: http://www.berkleepress.com/catalog/product?product_id=11399
I think composition is a tough thing to teach. It is a mixture of creativity, knowledge, inspiration, and work. You can teach the knowledge and encourage the work, but the other two are tough! Personally, I find that writing regularly (not just when I'm inspired) is important. And yet I still find my 'best' music comes quickly and effortlessly.
Thanks Bryan, for the link and the advice!
I've been using the Berklee Melody in Songwriting by Jack Perricone.
Very solid technical training in crafting strong melodies. I've been using this with a few of my pop- and jazz-minded college students.
BTW, you've got to have your standard notation skills together for this book.
