Convince me I need a Barber Tonepress...

Well, I've been wanting a compressor for a while. I play a jazz rock fusion style similar to Holdsworth, Shawn Lane, Garsed, Gambale, etc...I'm looking for that smooth liquid sustain feel.

Should I pull the trigger on the Tonepress?

If you need persuading on anything then no, you shouldn't pull the trigger.

Read as much as you can. When you feel comfortable that it will be the right fit for you, then go for it.

I just got one, and I use it for a very subtle thickening sound, not so much squashing. It's a great pedal.

If you want the transparency of the barber, but you also want some squash available (if you ever decide to funk it up), I highly recommend the Maxon CP9 Pro+. It can do the subtle "thickening" that people love the barber for, and it can also get you to some really musical heavy compression.

My 2nd recommendation behind the CP9 Pro is the Maxon CP101. It is a solid choice, and I happened to prefer it over the Barber.

The Barber definitely is a good comp. I mean, obviously there's a lot of appreciation for the Tone Press on TGP, but IMHO, you really should take a look at the Maxon comps.

It's much cheaper than some of the nice but redonkulously expensive comp/limiters in studios and it gets the freaking job done.

You don't want uber squash. You want the tone press.... nicely ironed. Not to mention you can probably find one or two used and not lose any money if it's not for you. Then you can move on to all the other great ones out there.
