I'm making progress (thanks to Scott) towards the LC tone. Here's the "Excuse" clip with me on the first verse and Carlton on the second. Obviously I don't have his touch or chops, but I'm getting closer to his tone. :D

Just an Excuse...to cop Larry's tone

Hopeully I played enough LC licks to give you something to compare to.

    Artcore AS83 -> Arion Digital Delay -> D-Clone Bassman.

don't forget larry uses a volume pedal and it really helps the notes swell and blossom.

    Very very close!:dude

Carlton seemed to use just a tad more hair.....slightly compresed.

Me thinks me might chop out the Carlton and compair for my self!

Thanks for the post. I haven't listened to much Carlton since the eighties. I bought my Fuchs on the strength of Scottl's clips which tend to impress all that listen! I am tending to gravitate toward these great guitarsts more since I have similar equipment now.

    Thanks for the listen!

I'm going to try another take with new strings and see if that gives me a little more grit. Listening this morning, it also sounds like he has the the neck pickup backed off a little with more emphasis on the bridge pup.

I love the way Carlton gets that biting attack and then the notes just get soft and warm. It's like he "wills" the tone out of each note. :D

Thanks, Tim! I guess you'll just have to build a Dumble clone now, won't you. ;)

Now there's an idea...but first I'll have to learn how to play. It's only been a year and a half, but what's coming out of my non-Dumble clone is beginning to resemble music.

And to everyone posting clips: while it's a great way to showcase your talent, get new ideas, receive constructive criticism, etc...it's truly inspirational to us beginners. Oh, and MORE VIDEOS! :D

Yup, that's doable too. I'd actually like to hear this amp in a live setting. Interested? (Give me a call.)

That would be cool. I think our next practice is 11/30. I'll check my WN e-mail for your number. If I can't find it I'll e you at WN.

    Hi Norm -
Up until :56 the tone was OK. But after that, very nice tone . . .and playing!!
You're getting the Carlton thing down! :)

Sorry to disappoint you, Greg, but everything after 00:56 was Larry Carlton. :p

I think that was probably Matt Rollings on keys but it may also have been Reese Wyans.

Just a little history on this track...it's a loop of the intro to Carlton's "Just an Excuse (to play the blues)" from his Sapphire Blue CD. Several months ago, a few of us were posting loops like this and this one seems to have stuck.

I did this clip primarily as a reference to Carlton's tone because I was going tone deaf trying to dial in my amp. I thought it might be fun to post a clip with me playing a verse before Carlton's solo so you guys could hear the progress I'm making with the amp.

Sorry if this lead any of you to think I was getting that good.:(

Actually, I can see you GETTING that good. :D
That's why I thought it was you.
And as for the tone prior to :56, it just seems - to me - a little thin. Fatten it up a bit and it will really improve. And I'm confident that you'll get it. :)

    Hey Norm,

Great clip! Here's a compliment for you. I was listening to the clip while reading the thread. I was waiting for LC to take over and before I knew it, the clip was over. I guess not only you copped his tone, but his touch and phrasing too. Good job!
