I posted this in a Pub thread that was quickly buried many pages deep. Thought it was worth reviving here.

While watching the DVD "America - Live in Central Park" (Go ahead and laugh, but those guys wrote some really catchy pop tunes IMO), I spotted this little combo lurking in the middle of the backline. Looks like it's covered in orange suede. Kinda cool, don't you think? :) Keep in mind this was filmed in the summer of 1979.

BTW, for anyone from the NYC area, this DVD is an awesome flashback to the terrific shows at the Wollman Rink. There's very little documentation covering those years of great music at budget prices. I highly recommend it!

Ah yes, the Schaefer Music Festival, every summer from somewhere like mid-June to something like early October... several shows a week, $1 for the cheap seats, $2 for the good seats. If I recall it changed names to some other corporate sponsor somewhere along the way. I left NY in 1978 and lost track so I don't know how many more years it went on.

I saw lots of great shows there between 1972 and 1978, including Peter Frampton (a couple of years before his mega-fame), Ginger Baker's Stratavarious band, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, King Crimson (the mid-seventies lineup with Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, John Wetton, and David Cross), and UK (with Bruford, Wetton, Eddie Jobson, and Allan Holdsworth).

The sponsor switched to Dr. Pepper (still great prices) from '77-79 and then the show moved to Pier 81 for a few more years. The America DVD opens with a shot of the band viewing the park from their hotel room high above 5th Ave. You can see the entire area, including the crowd that had already filled the rink. Really cool.

:D nothing like capturing the sweet tones of an Ovation w. a Dumble ;)

Not to mention the curly cord on the left. It's a miracle that any actual music was created back then. Ovations and curly cords. It's a travesty, I tell ya.
