I was directed from my other post to here, as someone mentioned that Huff was using rack gear during the 80's and that someone here has some ties with him, is this true? And if so, which gear did he use?

Can you say exact years when he used a rockman?

Apparently he has a dvd from early 90's with different amps in place, but i can spot a VHT power amp and a boogie preamp?

Scroll down to the picture with Dann. He probably had about the same gear as everyone else of the session players that used Bradshaw racks back then.

I remember reading an article when he was playing with Giant and he was using Peavey heads.

    The 5150s IIRC.

Late 80's but these are great for fans of Dann's and you can see some of the gear behind him

Dann used a rack like all of the Bradshaw guys. ....typical stuff in it as well......TSC chorus, DBX comp, TC2290......etc.

He used a Kasha Rockmod preamp, as well as a Boogie studio preamp for both gain and clean tones.

The gain tones on the first Giant record were a Soldano-modded Marshall that was slaved into the rack, and a Boogie studio pre for cleans.

    Cheers

I wonder what he used when he played for the Whitesnake. Love the sound on the Here i go again radio edit.

    Not sure on that one!

Here's a funny story.......I bought the first Giant record when it came out, and I LOVED the gain tones on it. This was back in 1989 or so. At the time, the Soldano sound was all over the radio, and I preferred the modded marshall sound as it had that more "stringy" marshall quality........not as "thick" sounding as the SLO.

I was talking to a guy who worked for Andy Brauer Studio Rentals in LA at the time (i.e., they did cartage for all of the LA session guys back then). The guy I talked to told me that it was a Soldano-modded Marshall that was slaved into his rack.

I called Mike Soldano, and asked if he would mod my Marshall, and he said sure......so, I sent it out to LA for the mod. It sounded good at low volumes, but once turned up just past bedroom levels, it was noisy as all get out! :(

I dumped the amp shortly after......

This was one of the many musical let-downs that I experienced over 37 years of gear whoring.....Live and learn! :)

A lot of these modded Marshall amp seem to be designed in a way that they sound better if not turned all the way up, i think this is the case with never Marshalls too such as JVM etc.

Sorry, but I was trying to be subtle, and kind..... ;)

In actuality, it sounded like ass! It was SO noisy that it was unusable....

I tried to have a couple of guys look at it, and then dumped it immediately.....

That’s one hell of a story Ian. So what are you using these days? What does your rack look like?

    I use 2 amps.....a PWE EH3 channel switcher, and a Naylor SD60, into a Bogner 4x12 with V30/G12H30 mix.

Rack is an Eventide Eclipse, Lexicon pcm-81, and ADA STD1 chorus.

It's been a long gear road, with its ups and downs. Most of my stuff I have had forever though.....
