So, I woke up this morning singing this song, which I knew from this movie:

Turns out, the guy singing the song in the movie is David Peel, the musician that wrote it and performed it originally in 1968:

While reading his discography, I saw he released an album called "King of Punk Rock" in 1978, which seemed like a bit of a musical shift. I checked out the album and there is an eleven minute long song called Who Killed Brian Jones? That's not very punk rock, I thought!
How wrong I was! It's eleven minutes of almost Stooges primitive bashing with some catchy lyrics about Brian Jones. Check it!

This is the guy Lennon sings about in New York City!

“Up come a man with a guitar in his hand
Singin' "Have a marijuana if you can"
His name was David Peel
We found that he was real”

Lennon produced David's "The Pope Smokes Dope" album for Apple Records, which was mostly banned upon release.
