I’m interested in getting my Strat refretted- do you guys think Greg at Metro is a good choice?
I’ve never gotten a refret done with him, but all other guitar work has been done wonderfully for a fair price, not to mention very quickly.
Thanks- I emailed Greg at Metro and he doesn't do refret work. He suggested Steve Ripley- anybody familiar?
The one guy I know is down in Fredericksburg, Thom Schiff. He takes forever, but everyone around here respects his work.
Pals, don't miss this!
I've seen Steve's work: He refretted a Tele Custom that I had a few years back, and did similar work on a friend's guitar as well. Decent job overall, but if I needed a refret these days I would probably explore other options.
I've gone to Philtone in Baltimore more recently, but my experience has been that you need to be prepared for a long wait time. I'm sort of in a similar boat -- looking for someone I can trust to assemble/set up my next partscaster.
I've heard good things about this guy in the DMV Musicians Facebook group, but I don't have any first-hand experience:
Hey John, hope you are well, my friend! Thanks for the tip. I'd prefer to not deal with guys who take forever, but will consider as a last resort.
Cool, thanks. I'll give Al a call and see what he says.
As a quick FYI, I did correspond with Steve Ripley, who sounds like a really nice guy. He estimates about $350 to refret my maple neck strat. My gut tells me this is on the very expensive side of things, so I'll be interested to get other estimates.
Mike Dove up in Silver Spring. I gave him my guitar and had it back in less than a week. He filed my frets down.
Thanks man! I'll look him up. Did he do a refret for you? Curious about his fees, but I'll call/email him to follow up.
That, my brother, is why I always add the caveat!
(all is well, but crazy as life can be!)
It was my intention to refret the 1st through about 5th frets. Mike said that wasn't necessary and filed them down for me. He even pointed out that my neck is a little bowed. I still love the guitar and after the fret job all the notes are in tune. The price was very reasonable and done it less than a week. If you are coming from Virginia it is worth the drive.

Does he have a site? Also, does he do SS frets?
Makes sense. Good luck, and please keep us posted on how it goes.
When Steve refretted my '70s Tele Custom, I know that the maple board was a real sticking point. He pointed out that there was poly applied after the fretwork during that era, which makes it a much more difficult job.
A quote of $350 might be a little high. Just for comparison, I had a full refret/Plek done at Philtone for slightly less than $400 if memory serves correctly. This was on a 52RI Tele.
He doesn’t do SS frets. His name and address will show up in google maps.
The weather is cooperating and I shall definitely be at JVs tonight for Pete Cage's band's gig. Say hi if you're there. This is me:
Yes, that is you.
Say hi to Pete for me (from Cape Cod) and enjoy....
I'll tell Pete, "Jon C told me to tell you he wanted so much to attend your gig but Sarah forced him to go to Cape Cod."
It was a fantastic show, I'm sorry no one from here came out. Maybe next time ...
Had the pleasure of meeting Pete yesterday afternoon when I dropped an amp off for service. Couldn't make it to the show, but I'm glad to hear it was a good one.
Many thanks to all who came by!
