Understated. Spanky. Balanced in every way. Tonally versatile. A joy to play. Most certainly accompanying me to Wednesday's practice. Ordered in 12/04. Mike was a pleasure to deal with and I enjoyed our conversations about tone, and the magic time he had in the heyday of the late 60's.

That's a beautifull guitar. I particularly like the tortoise shell that Mr. DeTemple uses on his guitars. Very striking. . .Now, how does it play and what does it sound like? I understand that he winds all of his own pickups. Is this true? C'est vrai?

Congrats! That's a very pretty guitar. I have no idea how you could wait almost 4 years for it though. I simply don't have that kind of patience. 4 weeks is about my limit.:)

I think each guitar has its own inherent characteristics and beauty. These things exist independently of price, wait times, and comparisons of "unlikes". There are some extremely talented luthiers out there.

The playability and tone are all that one would expect of a guitar of this caliber. The pickups are DeTemple's, obviously - I never asked him if he winds them himself or if someone does it for him.

The thing that I have learned over the years is that the tonal difference between various guitars (of the same style... strat, tele, gibby), are not terribly different from instrument to instrument, going through whatever effect chain, amp, etc.....

But if the basics are there.... acoustic resonance and balance, and VOLUME, unplugged, acoustic sustain, chordal note non-oscillation, and the right feel, based upon setup and the NECK..... one cannot go wrong with whatever guitar that is played..... and then it becomes not about the guitar.... but about what your hands and heart are doing.....

.... the guitar is but a conduit for that..... but it's always nice to start with a good foundation, and that foundation is based upon the instruments that are discussed here... and it all runs between the gamut of what we refer to as "high end", "unobtanium", etc..... but to me if there is such thing as "the low end"...... that should still be able to get you where you are going.

And..... then, so what if it might all be B.S..... (as it often is...)
It's still fun to talk to each other about it.

Very beautiful. I don't know how you stood waiting for four years to get the guitar. I would have been chomping at the bit. I love his pickguards.

My '56 was ordered 4/12/06. Butterscotch, not sunburst. I visited Detemple in Jan this year to try guitars and discuss specs. His estimate is early '09 at this point... so more like 3 years...original estimate was 2.75

I don't mind the wait-- most of it is over, and it allows me to pay it off over time.
