Sorry to have to report this to all but it appears that Dickey is slowing down. From his website:

    Special Announcement from Dickey Betts

In New York City, a place where Dickey Betts had had many great achievements, he played what will possibly become his last touring date on December 12, his 66th birthday.

"I’m not retiring from playing. I’m sure there will be some great special events that I’ll be at in the future. But for now, I look forward to waking up tomorrow with nothing on my schedule."

After more than 40 years of constant touring it’s time for a well deserved break. Stay tuned for updates on the Great Southern Band members and their associated projects, as well as updates on Dickey himself.

    Happy Holidays to all…………………

Things will never be the same for me. One of my heroes.

I think all players need to step aside at some point or another... We still want to see them play now and again, but there's a certain point when folks feel sorry for them HAVING to tour. There are exceptions... ie, BB and EC, but do I wanna see EVERY star of the 70s playing into THEIR 70s? Nah.

That's what Les Paul is looking down saying. Seriously though what a great player and a great journey. Hope he is healthy and enjoys many more years.

Last show I saw Dickie play was with ABB in 1999. It was a rare show for him at the time, where he stayed and played sober, used a maple neck 50's style Strat, and possibly played the best I've ever heard him.

In case there was ever any doubt about Dickie's talent when he was in the pocket:

I'm so glad I finally saw Dickey play this spring. He's a huge influence. Love his style and tone. And at the show I saw he looked good, wasn't drunk, and played a killer show. I'm thankful to have that memory.

Got to sit with him in his Phoenix hotel room back on September 23, 1973. He was eating a chicken dinner and talking to us guitar, bass and drum-playing teenagers about music. (A friend, the afore-mentioned drummer, was Jaimoe's cousin.) Afterwards backstage at his show (Elvin Bishop opened) got to see The Allmans tear it up. Only time I've ever seen them...it'll remain that way as they were so good and that was such a great time period and lineup for them. http://www.allmanbrothersband.com/m...nt&tapers=1&eid=608&day=23&month=09&year=1973

Me too! I saw him at the Cleveland House of Blues this past spring. It was a great show and am glad that I was finally able to see one of the greats that has influenced me over the years.

That's too bad but certainly understood for a guy who has been on the road for decades.

But, what is his son going to do now...without his dad...Duane is screwed.

He has had one hell of a career and life. He deserves to relax a bit. Enjoy Dickie!!

    Startin to look pretty frail.

Good for him that he can call his own shots. Some can't.

Dickie is a huge influence on my playing, and I've seen him a couple of times, though never with the Allmans. I've seen him on point, and still pissed off as well as drunk and sloppy, on top of being pissed off. The last was for the taping of the Rock Hall of Fame DVD. It wasn't a great show, but I had faith that he was on the up and up recently from reports on here. Its a shame I won't get to see him again probably, but I'm getting that he is making what seems to be a healthy decision.
