The format they came up with was definitely influential. Some of those changes were definitely "in the air" for many builders and it was matter of time because things like large LCD screens became a lot cheaper lately.

I designed a communications product with a multi-color LED back in '94/'95, so, no - they've been around for a very long time. I think that they were on some high-end recording consoles back as far as the '80s, but I could be mis-remembering.
