As I said I managed to do a backup (with pathdummper). I must admit that I could not get MIDI-Ox to work from my laptop although it runs. I couldn't get it to work the first time that it was recommended either. Are you running MIDI-Ox from a PC ? Tnx

Yes, I am a PC guy, except for iOS devices. I've used MIDI-OX on Win7 and Win10. Firewall could be blocking traffic for you. It does take some time to figure out MIDI-OX connections and workflow once up and running. If you are using USB midi there are/were some issues with Windows; I believe Win10 sorted those issues out, tho. USB Audio Interface connection is not the issue it is/was a MIDI over USB problem.

That's great you successfully performed a dump backup; can you dump that backup to your 2101? If not, there could be issues with your backup. Also, you should be able to dump single programs to and from 2101 just using 2101 and MIDI-OX.

Anyone know who repairs the 2101? I have one that no longer operates the tube functions, just the effects part works. Even worth repairing?

    I don't know of a repair person/ company.
Have you done a hard reset?
Have you opened it up to investigate blown caps? Open it up and post a photo or four here.

Midi Wizard for 2101 claims to do a health check; I haven't tried it.

The only 2101 version worth repairing, IMO would be the blue dual disc LE. If you just have a single disc Studio Tube, I shouldn't think it would be worth it.

Did you try both front and rear guitar inputs, etc? Give us as many details as you can and we might be able to at least partially trouble-shoot the problem. Adding our info to the schematics that are available online, we might be able to steer any competent local electronics technician to the problem.

Thanks will do something when I get around to it. At this point it’s been down and in the closet for a few years and it is a basic single processor unit. I was a fan of the EQ section though.

The front input had failed and I was only able to use the back one, then the tube functions failed and now it’s only good as effects.

Is it only the tube distortions that are not working or also the three solid state distortions? The more details you give us the better.

Yes only the tube distortions and the clean tube preamp function. The imitation preamp functions still work

The next logical question would be, "Have you tried changing the 2 tubes?"

If changing the tubes didn't solve it, then you're at a stage where you need a tech who could use the schematics in the link I provided and who knows how to operate the 2101. I've had one of the opto-couplers that control the gain in the tube stages fall way out of spec, but that's only one of several possible problems that could occur.

I am not sure what is going on. I can no longer get pathdumper to work. I get a time out error for sysex receive and it seems to freeze when I try to receive a program. The good news is I got MIDI-OX to work after a few trials and trying to follow the help. Basically the MIDI input was not being selected (even though there was only 1 MIDI input). Also saving the dump was not very intuitive as all the instructions said to follow the menu, but there are no menu options to "save". Only when I decided to quit what I was doing did I get the "save" options. Again not very intuitive even for someone like me, who is normally quite good with software.

Btw you can also use an external preamp valves of an amp unit so long as it can be connected to the effects loop. This can be found on P88 of the GSP2101 manual. You need to set LOOP to external for the LOOP parameter in a given program. I suppose "SUMMED" & external will give the same sound in this case. Have you tried that ? Does it work ?

Hey, man...keep chipping away and you'll get there :)

That's unfortunate re: patchdumper. I found those programs to be a bit flakey...see my big old posts on page 2 of this thread...

Good news you have MIDI-OX working. Saving dumps from external unit to computer is not intuitive...I agree!
"trying to follow the help"...? Whose help? MIDI-OX? or my ultra long-winded post on page 2 of this thread? Sounds like you are talking about MIDI-OX help. Try my posts if you are struggling; I did quite a few screen shots. MIDI-OX has menus within menus, and does plenty you might not need :)

I had to work away from my workstation to connect to the GSP2101, so I lost my second screen. So I was a bit limited toon my laptop to look at your instructions, but I will try and bring the GSP closer so I can have your thread open.......

Which 2101 User Manual are you referring to? I am using the 2101 Artist Manual as mine is all updated to Artist 3.00.00 firmware.

"external" ? Ugh, this bloody manual:facepalm...trying to be yer pal and confusing terminology. "External" in the 2101 usually means an external expression pedal. (page 77)

from the manual re FX Loop page 7:
"How the FX Loop Return’s signals combine with the original signal can be defined and stored into each Program, using the following settings:

Bypass - The FX Loop Returns are off, and completely ignored.

Summed - The FX Loop Returns are summed together with the original signal using a 50:50 ratio.

No Sum - If plugs are connected to the FX Loop Return jack(s), they are the primary signal source. If there is no signal present at these jacks, you don't hear anything from the GSP-2101 Artist. When the jacks aren't used, No Sum behaves the same as the FX Loop Bypass setting.

Every Program in the 2101 has the FX Loop set to bypass, so you will need to turn the loop on in each Program that requires the external processing. See Editing Effects on pg. 13 for information concerning parameter editing."

I have used the effects section only and it works alright; bypassing the 2101 preamp. Other FX units do this much better tho (ie Lexicon). I have tried the 4CM on P88 with amps that have an improperly designed FX loop and that was a mess. I may well try tomorrow with some of my other guitar pres with better fx loops...

hey, I was learning when I wrote that up...I just didn't find it anywhere else on the net...I have since reread and I could improve it...that said, the "basic" steps are there...possibly a bit skewed to my specific system...but hopefully can help :)

I should have also mentioned that the 2101 output in the above image probably needs to go into a Solid state amp or PA/mixer if you don't want to hear the effect of the power amp valves. I will be doing this kind of set-up hopefully when I get an "External" stand alone pre-amp where I can easily swap tubes etc., like the Laney IRT. I am hoping that I will be able to try out some new combinations of new & NOS valves that give me a wider range of tones than what I currently get from the GSP (and where I won't need to recalibrate the system).
