Very influential on the current generation of metal, anyway. There are certainly some who are more technical, like Petrucci or Rhoads. And, as mentioned, Iommi pretty much defined metal guitar.

When Pantera came on with Cowboys from Hell DB was the best at what he was doing. At the time when the world was turning their back on the hair metal scene CFH was a oh **** WTF Moment. It was brutal.

Like all the greatest players, he was pretty humble about things. He just genuinely loved playing. For what Pantera did, he was the best. There will never be another Dimebag.

Iommi was basically a blues player

and technical ability =/= good. randy was good, but had a little slop sometimes. petrucci has never written a good hook

dimebag was the combination of the 70s blues "metal" and combining it with NWOBHM stuff
