Seriously? Sure, it's just another music biz swindle of an institution, but a couple dozen one-hit wonders get voted in first year of eligibility and Dire Straits doesn't? They influenced tons and tons of bands, guitar players and songwriters, made classic, enduring albums and singles, and played stadiums around the world. Maybe I'm just being old and cantankerous. Prob'ly so. :facepalm

I'm with you, but you answered your own question. The part about "swindle of an institution."

Actually, it makes me like them -- and Knopfler -- all the better that they're not included.

I was going to say "Never On The Cover of Rolling Stone", but they were when they broke big on "Brothers In Arms". Still, as far as America's concerned, it's a 2.5 hit wonder with too many sweatbands.

They're in my hall of fame. Nothing else matters (to me).

Isn't eligibility based on 25 years from a band's first release. Dire Straits was around 1978, so they wouldn't be eligible yet.

That makes them eligible since 2003.

My prediction is that they will end up there before too long. Soon enough there will be little to choose from with regard to nominations anyway. Then again, if the Beastie Boys' induction is any indication, it soon won't matter at all about credentials.

And what Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame would leave Deep Purple out.

    What a joke.

The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, brought to you by the guy who puts out the Top 100 Guitarists list, eliciting the same result.

Naw theres no room for them.
The industry has too usher in the Rap and Pop acts in place of actual Rock acts.
After inducting Madonna I have Nothing but disdain for the R&R HOF.
They represent nothing other than industry approved hyperbole.
We need an actual Rock Hall of Fame that only considers Rock acts not Pop,Rap or any other fringe of music but hey what do I know.

From the get go the place was kind of a joke, it's been down hill ever since.

Plus I always think of Groucho's line...."I'd never want to be a member of a club that would want me as a member."

The whole ethic of Rock n Roll just doesn't jibe with the idea of a Hall of Fame.

I don't know WHY acts that legitimately should be in a HoF for Rock 'n' Roll allow themselves to be inducted into this sham. Personally, I think a large part of our vitriol should be directed at the legitimate acts that don't publicly pull themselves out. They don't, because it's about money and industry politics - nothing else. As far as I'm concerned, ANY groups credibility ends once they go in. Deep Purple, Rush, etc. should be proud not to be involved.

The reason why there is no real RnR HoF that only inducted ACTUAL RnR acts is because it would be deemed "racist" and would either be anathema within the industry, or would quickly devolve into including The Spinners just to evade the charge.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame started out OK and then went off the rails when Madonna and Run DMC were inducted. Chicago isn't in there, Peter Frampton, Rush and many others. It became all about which bands were deferential to Jan Wiener in their heyday.
