Dirty Boy Afro Fuzz question

I just purchased my first Dirty Boy pedal, the Afro Fuzz. Great sounding fuzz but I have one question. The fuzz knob seems to be unusable unless turned all the way up. If I back it off past 3 o'clock, the sound becomes very muddy with no fuzz present. Is it supposed to be like this or is there a defect in the pedal? Any help would be great.

Why do you think it's built that way?

No idea. But, as far as fuzz faces go, this is the fattest and rudest I've heard so I don't mind.
