I just received a used fender custom shop relic i bought from a fellow tgp member, and it has two small chunks/dents in the back of the neck. I was told there were no issues with the guitar, but I thought the back of the necks weren't banged around like the bodies were. Am i mistaken? Should those two chunks/dings/dents be there?

    thanks!

Never saw dents or dings on a Relic neck.
    Wear spots yes, dents no.

I think I've seen it all now. I'm not trying to start $H&T but somebody is complaining about the condition of a relic?????

is it a major chuck or just a little ding, I have a few relics myself (non Fender CS) and there is a few dings that have no effect on it at all, its all just part of it, I agree with the above user.

Its a relic learn to live with it

    Hold on there now.
I see why you're saying that but.....

One of the attractions of a Relic is that they have a broken in feel but you are starting with new frets and an undinged neck so for all practical purposes it's new as far as playability wear.

If you play it the neck dings will come.

Spydog, it is a bargaining point if you can get them to acknowledge that these are not factory.
Being a Relic doesn't mean you have to put up with damage without the price being compensated accordingly.

I think relics are the best thing ever happened to the manufacturers.
Every time they ding up something there is no more hard labor "saving the piece", they just send it to the relic department.

I highly doubt it left Fender with neck dings.

Maybe it was originally sold as a 2nd.

neck dings never bothered me, but it is weird and not a factory standard for the custom shop. an excuse to sand the neck!!! oooooh that'll be nice :)

Do people really keep track of the factory marks and the marks they've put on their relics themselves? Fender says that the frets will be fresh but they do wear the neck quite a bit on some models.

I guess some do but the question is of the neck dings.
It is well known by Relic afficianados that the necks are not dinged from the factory so for a buyer it may/ may not be an issue.

    True.
There was a CS relic at a Sam Ash store I went to and the salesman said that that's the only guitar that they don't worry about people playing (accidentally banging it into a corner). Who's gonna know the difference?

    No dings on CS necks,

I have seen loads of them, look at the musiczoo pics, 'the finish' may be gone but no scratches or dings on the neck.

I agree with bluesjuke, However, the tribute ones
    do, the 20k Claptons did
    the 17k Lennys do

    some Masterbuilts may

but the other 99% that I have laid my mitts on didn't

Not at all. Totally legit concern. The back of the necks are silky smooth unfinished or have a nice, thin coated gloss but never dings or dents. They do on the headstock.

Since it's a used guitar doesn't it depend on how big the dings are? I wouldn't see a problem if they are truly small, and if the guitar sounds good, I wouldn't even think about it.

I have (2) Masterbuilt Tele's with dings in the neck as you glide on up the back with your hands...The old real ones I once owned had them also....
