A number of years ago I made a nema 120vac to 1/4 inch power cable.
I did this to hook my variac up to my 4x12 to break in some v30.s.
    Noisy but it works.
Afterwards I put the cable in a rubbermaid container full of other amp and computer related items and haven't used it since.
This evening I go downstairs and too my horror I see that my son has (left) this cable plugged into the preamp out of my old pignose.
Luckly it looks like the preamp out was very high impedance because the pignose still works.
Needless to say the house could have burned down.

The house burned down is the least of your problems, your SON could have died

And I am glad that neither of these things happened.

    Just bypass the amp entirely.

Yes that could have been a possibility too.
But at the time of my discovery that wasn't the immediate concern because he was playing the piano and the amp was left unattended and plugged in.
