I've always wanted to pick one up (or build one), but haven't gotten around to it. I did have an opto-theremin (which isn't as cool) and a few theremin parts on my last album (all done on keyboard).

I've been playing the Theremin (Moog Etherwave) for a few years and I still suck at it. Here's a great clip of the contemporary Theremin queen, Pamelia Kurstin, playing brilliantly through a loop pedal - and she's holding a smoke the whole time. Check it:

Wow..........that was cool! She's a recognized pro, but it still sometimes sounds like dying cats to me...... :dunno

I'd love to pick one up and try it out- I'm sure its one of those things that is a LOT harder in reality than it looks on stage.

I have two but can't honestly say I "play" them. More like just make strange noises and do the "page" thing with them.

as a kid I built one from a kit because of Page, obviously. It was a single antenna and I just hooked up a volume pedal and a delay.. later as I got into Phish I would fancy playing some different tunes vocal parts with it.. A friend has had it for a few years now and I am assuming I will never get it back but it was fun while it lasted!

To me, there is nothing that compares to sitting around the fireplace during this time of year and playing holiday songs for the whole family on a theremin.

Took the kids to see Paramore a couple months ago and was totally surprised when the opening act, a group called Paper Route, brought out a Theremin for several numbers. It’s the first time I’ve seen one integrated into a rock performance, basically used as a “lead solo” instrument no differently than a guitar. Sounded great! I’m pretty sure a good 80% of the audience had NO IDEA what that weird looking thing with the antenna was!

watching these people who really know how to play this thing amazes me. just a different position of their hand and fingers changes the notes.
